Apple Watch Issue with Tattooed Skin The Professor May 1, 2015 Professor's Tips, Wearables Apple Watch users that have tattoo sleeves and more specifically tattoos on their wrist are not able to get notifications or their heart rate. They began expressing their concerns and frustrations on Reddit where it came out that many other tattooed Apple lovers were having the same problem. Apple’s support page that gives information about getting your heart rate on the Apple Watch does make the following statement below. “Permanent or temporary changes to your skin, such as some tattoos, can also impact heart rate sensor performance. The ink, pattern, and saturation of some tattoos can block light from the sensor, making it difficult to get reliable readings.” It seems to be worse for those who have tattoos with solid areas with deeper inks such as black or red inks. While the Apple Watch was a highly anticipated wearable that many were so excited to try out, this discovery is a bit disappointing. There were suggestions of using a chest strap for workouts to get proper heart rate readings, but that just seems like it defeats the purpose of the “watch” aspect of the device. This Apple Watch issue could be a big deterrent for potential buyers. So if you were thinking of investing in the Apple Watch and have tattoos on your wrist, make sure you go to an actual store to test out its features to ensure you won’t have to deal with any inconvenience.
