Earlier today it was announced that Facebook will be rolling out a new feature, the dislike button.  Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that they will unveil the dislike button fairly soon.  Zuckerberg was quoted saying,

“People have asked about the ‘dislike’ button for many years, and probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it.”

This will give users the option to express more emotions other than just liking a friend’s post.  There are definitely certain posts that it may feel awkward to “like”, and now with a dislike button, users will be able to support a post accordingly.  Especially for posts that you want to share your empathy for your friend if they have lost a loved one or are going through a particularly difficult time.  Zuckerberg had shared back in December that they were thinking about a dislike button and now with much excitement it is coming to fruition.   Naturally, Facebook does have some reservations about the use of a dislike button and don’t want to promote negative interactions.  Negatively reacting to someone’s post could cause those users to withhold sharing status updates.  We will just have to see how it goes once the dislike feature is available and hope that will work out for the best.
