Sony actually started out as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Company).  The founders wanted to change the name in order to become successful in European and American markets.  The name came from the Latin word sonus means “sound” and the popular American expression “sonny-boy”.
